                              Women empowerment has become the need of the hour to sensitize young women on how they should come out of the clutches of gender issues and to realise their full identity and power. With this view, St. Joseph College of Teacher Education for Women, conducted a UGC sponsored 2 day Workshop on Developing Alternatives for Women of the New Era (DAWN) organized by Department of Student Services (DSS), M.G. University , on 7th&8th August, 2012.

PROFILE OF THE INSTITUTION

History Of the College

St.Joseph College of Teacher Education for women Ernakulam is established and managed by the Carmelite Nuns (Congregation of Mother of Carmel,CMC) consider the upliftment of women and children as their ‘Divine Call’.The institution is an important organ of the congregation fulfilling this command at any cost.The college established in 1957 located in the heart of Kochi city, is a minority institution, affiliated to Mahatma Gandhi University,Kottayam.It is owned and run by Vimala Province of the congregation of mother of Carmel (CMC).This edifice of learning and holistic enrichment nestles on 2 acres 31.5 cents calm and serene ground and is a unique blend of the old and new architectural styles.

In an attempt to bring to fruition the dreams of it’s founder visionaries,the institution began with an initial intake capacity of 100 students with 4 optionals and ever since,the college has been scaling new heights.At present, the intake capacity has increased to 200 in the B.Ed stream with 6 optional.In 2005 the college moved to a new trajectory of growth with the inclusion of the P.G and elementary Teacher Education Courses.This college,the first college of teacher education in kochi the queen of the Arabian Sea has established in it’s chequered history of over 5 decades a good will and reputation as a worthy center of Teacher Education.

It is universally acknowledged that education is an effective means for social reconstruction and to a great extent; it offers solution to the problems a society is faced with.Realizing the significance of techer education, Vimala Province entered into this realm through the establishment of the St:Joseph Training College for women in 1957.As women, we consider it as our special call to promote the status of women everywhere especially in our country. With this specific objective we started this college exclusively for women.CMC has invested money,manpower and materials mainly in the apostolate of education.Ever Since it's inception the successive provincial superiors of the province have been pillars of this institution acting as the Educational Agency.

We strive to excel in providing teachers of high caliber who respond to t he Divine Call in rendering selfless service to the mankind as modeled in the Eternal Teacher, Jesus Christ.

Activities


Women’s Cell

Women’s Cell of the institution aims at the overall development of her students in the college through making them aware of their special role in building the society, conscientising them on gender issues, bringing out the best in them, providing opportunities in the form of discussions, seminars and developing leadership qualities in them.

Tourism Club

Tourism Club aims at creating awareness in the socio-economic relevance of tourism, its career prospects for the students and to identify the tourist spots in Kerala.

Health Club

Health Club aims at spreading awareness on health and hygiene and maintaining one’s own surroundings clean.

Youth Red Cross

Youth Red Cross provides opportunities to attend seminars, training programmes and social services that promote social concern.

Social Service Club

Social Service Club undertakes programmes to inculcate in the students cooperation, feeling of brotherhood, kindness and sensitivity through various activities like distribution of clothes, meals, visiting orphanages, conducting awareness programmes and providing free tuitions.

Zeitgeist

Zeitgeist the literary association of English Optional serves to develop the literary and aesthetic sense of the students. Their watch word ‘pen is mightier than the sword’ is proved through the various activities.

Sahithi

Sahithi the association of the Malayalam optional true to its motto ‘Enrich our culture and literature and thus enrich Kairali ‘ organizes activities to improve and enrich Malayalam language.

Expressions

Mathematics tries to express the world wide problems in the form of simple equations and solve it. It aims to make mathematics an interesting subject by correlating with other subjects and life.

Scientech

Scientech the Physical Science Association tries to develop vigour and enthusiasm in future science teachers and coming generations.

Silent Spring

Silent Spring The natural Science association Silent Spring is formed with the motto “ Nuture Nature for future”

Renaissance

Renaissance the vision of Social Science Association is the enlightenment of the society to a new age and is leading the society on a new path that upholds values.

Excursion and Study Tours

Excursion and Study Tours are conducted every year as part of the training programme.

House Activities

There are 4 houses-Mahatama House,Nehru House, Tagore House and Radhakrishna House. Various inter house competitions are held in connection with Arts Day,Sports Day and celebrations of important days.Judges are selected from among the 4 houses for each item.
